Andy has been drawing trains for 30 years.  He taught himself to draw the trains he loved by taking photos of them and then going home and trying to draw them. In the beginning, he shared his drawings only with family and friends. There was no internet, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube when he started. His favorite railroad was Burlington Northern.

He drew his first BN grain train after visiting the Izaak Walton Inn when he was 13 in 1988. On Spring break in 1991 he made a trip with a friend to Seattle, Washington to railfan the Burlington Northern. He saw an unusual red, white & blue engine leading a intermodal train in Edmonds and photographed it. It was the freshly painted BN 1991 "Pulling for Freedom" SD60M painted in honor of BN employees who served in Desert Storm. He sent a print of the drawing to Gerald Grinstein, Burlington Northern's President and CEO.  This drawing and Gerald Grinstein's return letter lead to Andy designing the Burlington Northern Executive SD70MACs and 1,000s more drawings since then. All of his drawings are done by hand using a pencil, a pocket pal and dual markers.

In January of 2012 Andy sent his drawings and an idea for 20 Norfolk Southern 30th Anniversary Heritage engines to NS President & CEO Wick Moorman. The idea was approved by Wick and Norfolk Southern and within a few short months they were being painted on ES44ACs and SD70ACes. They were on public display at the North Carolina Transportation Museum July 3rd & 4th 2012.

He will be giving away a variety of  his train booklets, postcards and stickers.
